Buy a Nikon D5200 and get a Grip

Take a look at these Battery Grips - they can make your life easier

When you by a Nikon D5200, it is worth thinking about getting a battery grip as well. A good battery grip will serve three very useful purposes. Firstly, you get more power - or at least power for longer. Whilst the D5200 is more efficient than the D5100, it can drain batteries, especially when shooting video. Live-view eats a lot of power. Secondly, you get an extra shutter release button. This means that it is easier to shoot portraits. Thirdly you get the added weight and feel of a larger camera body. The Nikon D5200 is not a big camera and some might find it difficult to hold in certain situations. The battery grip makes it much bulkier and easier to hold. It can also help to balance the canera if you have a large lens. Funnily enough, it can actually help to reduce camera shake.

There are no battery grips specifically available for the D5200 at the moment, so if you buy a Nikon D5200, get one that fits the Nikon d5100. It will fit perfectly, though it is sometimes difficult removing the battery door at the bottom of the camera. The secret is a small screwdriver and the gentle but firm application of force. We shall do a video on it soon to show you how it is done.

Obviously you get what you pay for. We would recommend that you look at something in the $50 range. It needs to be sturdy enough to support the camera and, possibly a decent sized lens. They have tripod fixings, of course, but some of the cheaper ones can be vulnerable to breakage. Finally, you need to remember that you may only use the official Nikon batteries. This sounds like a con, as there are generic batteries available, but the camera can detect the generic batteries and will complain. Whilst it isn't necessary to get a Nikon battery grip when you buy your D5200, you really should get the Nikon batteries.
