The battery for the Nikon D5200
The battery for the Nikon D5200 is the lithium Ion EN-EL14.
The battery comes with a charger and can be used in the Nikon battery grip. It is always a good idea to fully charge your battery when you use it for the first time and to let it run down to almost empty before recharging. On the D5200, the battery compartment is at the bottom of the camera, effectively within the hand grip below the shutter release button and is accessed by a small door. The battery can only be inserted if it is the right way round. Whilst it is the same battery as used by the D5100, the D5200 seems to be more efficient and so lasts longer on a single charge. The camera shows the charge left to the battery on the articulated back screen in the top right corner. There are generic batteries available, but the camera can detect if the battery is a Nikon Branded battery and it may cause problems. This battery is also compatible with the Nikon coolpix P7000, Nikon P7100, Nikon P7700, Nikon D3100, Nikon D3200 and Nikon D5100.
If you are looking to extend your camera life when you are out in the filed, there are two obvious was of doing it. Firstly, you could take a spare battery and replace the original when necessary. Alternatively you could invest in a battery grip. The grip from the D5100 will fit the D5200 and it allows two batteries to feed the camera, so effectively doubling the camera life. You can see our battery grip page here.
